I'm feeling really burned out this week. I almost lost my mind today when all my patients showed up late and then asked me to see them and their spouse and their kids all in a 10 minute appointment. I'm sure the nurses were tired of hearing my bitching. Good thing there is no race next weekend because it's been 5 weekends in a row of racing now and I'm pooped mentally and physically. Not that I don't have to do 3 hour rides over the weekend for training...

That sounds really tough! I truly don't know how you family doctors ever manage to see a patient in just 10 minutes -- it's so impressive. Hope your patients tomorrow all show up on time and have reasonable-to-manage complaints!

oh, today was even worse! 3 patients showing up more than 30 minutes after their appointments. I snapped and wouldn't see them.

Good on you for not seeing them. The excuse that you sometimes run late is never acceptable for them chosing to arrive late. If they want to continue to see you, they'll learn to respect your schedule and that of every other patient who has arrived at the appropriate time.

Hope next week is better. x

I'm struggling with this too, as a new to practice doc. One suggestion given to me was to always double-book your first slot in the AM and after lunch (ie 2 patients booked at 830, but none at 845). This way at least one is hopefully ready when you are. I haven't tried it yet but I'm thinking of doing that.
