Horse slaughter

I just read a big thing on Willie Nelson's website about stopping horse slaughter. My question is: why is it worse to kill a horse than to kill a cow? They're both treated poorly on the way to slaughter by many slaughterhouses. They're slaughtered in similar fashions. They're both used for meat. In theory, you could ride both, although I've never seen someone ride a cow. Cows are just as lovable and cute as horses. I just don't understand the horse/cow double standard.

I don't see how it's right to kill any animal, unless it is endangering you or someone you love (ie if you're being attacked by a grizzly bear). That's why I'm vegetarian.

I kind of feel like I have every right to kill prey animals to eat as a lion does. The difference is that we owe it to the animals to do it in as humane a way as possible (and sometimes, considering the ravages of the beef industry, I do consider becoming a vegetarian because the beef industry is pretty inhumane)

Americans eat Australian lamb ... because they don't want to slaughter their own sheep?

lamb is an accepted food in this country but we're discussing horses.

But why is it accepted, that's what I don't understand. It's totally arbitrary.

Horses are viewed as companion, sport and work animals, not as food animals. Cows and lambs don’t run in the KY Derby. They don’t carry our mounted police. They aren’t used in Hippotherapy. They didn’t carry our soldiers into battle. You could ask the same question about dogs and cats. It’s our culture just as it is a culture to eat dogs and cats in other countries. It is what it is. We don’t view our pets as food animals.

They slaughter kangaroos here in Australia. I've never eaten kangaroo meat but apparently it's DELICIOUS!
